Oregon Scenic Bikeways

Oregon Scenic Bikeways

The Oregon Scenic Bikeways program showcases some of the finest cycling routes in the Pacific Northwest. Created in 2009 through a partnership between Oregon State Parks, Cycle Oregon, Travel Oregon, and the Oregon Department of Transportation, it remains the only state-designated scenic bikeway program in the United States.

Each bikeway has been carefully selected for its outstanding scenery, enjoyable roads, and memorable riding experience. Together they highlight Oregon's remarkable variety of landscapes—from high desert plateaus and volcanic peaks to quiet farming valleys, coastal forests, and winding river canyons.

Ride Oregon's Most Scenic Roads

Unlike many cycling routes that simply connect two points, Scenic Bikeways are destinations in themselves. Every route has been evaluated for scenic beauty, road quality, rider enjoyment, and safety. Official highway signs guide cyclists along the route, while detailed maps and GPS files make planning your ride simple.

Whether you're looking for a leisurely afternoon ride or a challenging mountain adventure, there is a Scenic Bikeway to match your interests and abilities.

Explore Central Oregon

Central Oregon is home to several of Oregon's designated Scenic Bikeways, making our region one of the premier cycling destinations in the state. Riders can experience spectacular mountain views, quiet country roads, pine forests, lava fields, and open ranchlands—all within a short drive of Bend, Sisters, Redmond, or Prineville.

Many local cyclists return to these routes year after year because every season offers something different, from wildflowers in the spring to brilliant autumn colors and crystal-clear mountain skies.

Planning Your Ride

Each Scenic Bikeway includes resources to help riders prepare before leaving home. Available information typically includes:

  • Printable route maps
  • Ride with GPS navigation files
  • Distance and elevation profiles
  • Road surface information
  • Suggested services and nearby communities
  • Points of scenic and historical interest

Reviewing a route in advance helps riders choose rides that match their fitness level, available time, and preferred riding style.

More Than Beautiful Roads

The Scenic Bikeways program also encourages riders to discover the communities that make each region unique. Many routes pass through small Oregon towns where cyclists can enjoy local cafés, bakeries, parks, museums, and historic landmarks before continuing their journey.

These rides celebrate not only Oregon's natural beauty but also the people, history, and communities that give each region its character.

Start Exploring

Whether you're planning your first organized ride, searching for a new weekend adventure, or looking for your next cycling challenge, Oregon Scenic Bikeways provide an outstanding place to begin.

With seventeen officially designated routes across the state—and more being considered—the program offers countless opportunities to experience Oregon from the seat of a bicycle.
