Few bicycle shops in Central Oregon can trace their roots as far back as Hutch's Bicycles. What began in Eugene in 1927 has grown into one of Oregon's longest-standing bicycle retailers, serving generations of riders while helping shape the region's cycling culture.

The business was founded by Earl "Hutch" Hutchinson, who originally sold bicycles alongside lawnmowers and key-making services. As cycling grew in popularity, the family's focus gradually shifted entirely to bicycles, establishing the foundation for what would become a well-known name among Oregon cyclists.

A major chapter in the company's history began in the 1970s when Jim Lewis joined Hutch's. An enthusiastic young racer and longtime customer, Jim combined his love of competitive cycling with a growing knowledge of the bicycle business. Under the mentorship of owner Bill Hutchinson, he developed both as a mechanic and as a businessman while becoming an accomplished road racer, criterium racer, and hill climber.

When Hutch's opened its Bend location in 1981, Jim became the store manager and eventually the owner of the iconic Third Street shop. His arrival coincided with an exciting period in Central Oregon cycling. Road riding was flourishing, and the rapid growth of mountain biking—along with the development of the Phil's Trail network—helped transform Bend into one of the country's premier cycling destinations. Throughout those years, Hutch's became an active participant in local clubs, races, and community events, contributing to the area's growing reputation as a cycling center.

Today, Hutch's continues that tradition under the leadership of Brian Lewis, who purchased the Bend business in 2024. Brian's connection to the shop stretches back to childhood. He grew up around bicycles, learned the business from the ground up, and spent countless hours helping in the store before eventually assuming ownership. His goal has been to preserve the values established over decades while continuing to serve the Central Oregon cycling community.
