Learning to Sit Quietly
One of the rarest experiences in modern life is silence.
Not because silence has disappeared.
Because we've become uncomfortable with it.
The moment a few quiet minutes appear, we reach for a phone.
Turn on the television.
Start another podcast.
Open another webpage.
Our minds are constantly occupied.
Living intentionally invites us to try something different.
Not to fill every quiet moment...
but to experience it.
You Don't Need to Empty Your Mind
Many people avoid meditation because they believe they're supposed to stop thinking.
That's impossible.
The mind thinks.
That's what it does.
The goal isn't to eliminate thoughts.
It's to notice them without immediately following every one.
Imagine sitting beside a river.
Leaves float past on the current.
You don't need to climb aboard every leaf.
You simply watch them pass.
Thoughts can be like that.
Five Quiet Minutes
You don't need special cushions.
Or music.
Or perfect posture.
Simply find a comfortable place.
Close your eyes if you wish.
Notice your breathing.
Listen to the sounds around you.
When your thoughts wander—and they will—gently bring your attention back to the present moment.
No judgment.
No frustration.
Just begin again.
Making Space
Silence doesn't always provide answers.
Sometimes it provides perspective.
A problem that felt overwhelming at noon often feels manageable after a few quiet minutes.
Not because the problem changed.
Because we did.
Reflection isn't always about finding solutions.
Sometimes it's simply creating enough space to see things more clearly.
An Invitation
Try sitting quietly for five minutes.
Not to accomplish anything.
Not to improve yourself.
Just to become familiar with your own thoughts.
You may discover that beneath the constant noise of everyday life...
there is a quieter voice that's been waiting patiently for your attention.
Living Intentionally
The world will always ask for your attention.
From time to time...
give it back to yourself.
One intentional moment at a time.
