A Beautiful Day to Ride

September 08, 2026

Nothing particularly exciting happened on today’s Cardiac Kids ride—and that may have been the best thing about it.

The morning already felt like fall when Amy, April, Brad, Chris, Geoff, Jason, Nate, and Steve gathered at Sahalee Park in downtown Madras. The temperature was still in the high fifties, cool enough for sleeves and light jackets, but the sky promised warmer weather before the ride was over.

We headed out to ride the Madras Scenic Bikeway counter-clockwise. It did not take long for the route to remind us that the country surrounding Madras is rarely flat. An early climb stretched the group into smaller clusters, with the stronger climbers moving ahead and the rest of us settling into our own pace.

No one worried about the gaps. We regrouped before the next major climb on Southwest Belmont Lane, caught our breath, and prepared to do it again.

The climb spread us out once more, but eventually everyone reached the top and we continued toward Lake Billy Chinook. By then, the cool morning air was beginning to soften. The distant hills, open farmland, and broad Central Oregon sky made it the kind of day when riding a bicycle felt less like exercise and more like a privilege.

At the PGE Overlook, we stopped to enjoy the view and re-carb. Snacks came out of jersey pockets, water bottles were emptied and moved from front to back, and the usual conversations moved easily from one subject to another. There was no hurry. We still had miles to ride, but we had good weather, good company, and nowhere else we needed to be.

From the overlook, we continued toward Culver, then looped back through Metolius. There were a few breakaways along the way. We always managed to rein them back in—although, strictly speaking, they may have simply waited for us.

By the time we returned to Southwest Belmont Lane and followed the road back toward Sahalee Park, the temperature had climbed to around seventy degrees. Jackets had disappeared into pockets, the group had settled into the comfortable rhythm that comes late in a good ride, and the park gradually came back into view.

There were no (serious) mechanical problems, no wrong turns, no crashes, and no heroic rescues. Everyone who started the ride returned together.

Nothing exciting happened.

It was simply a beautiful day spent riding through Central Oregon with great friends—and sometimes that is more than enough.

Beautiful day. Great friends. No drops.
